The Benefits of Flossing

Updated: Mar 6

Flossing is a way to remove food particles and plaque from between the teeth. This is important because plaque contains bacteria which, if left on the teeth, can cause problems like gum disease and tooth decay. Plaque and calculus irritate the gums, which causes them to pull away from the teeth. This places the teeth in a vulnerable position, which leads to the development of cavities.

Flossing can be time-consuming, but it only takes a few minutes every day.

When is the best time to floss?

Flossing your teeth is best done when the teeth are still dry. Some people experience bleeding when they floss, and this only happens when their teeth are too wet. Try to avoid flossing your teeth immediately after eating, and wait until they are dry.

When you brush your teeth, make sure you floss carefully. Don’t just rip the floss between your teeth. Break off about 18 inches of floss and wrap it around your fingers. Use your thumbs and forefingers to guide the floss. Gently slide it between your teeth, making sure you go beneath the gum line.
